About Me

Ellen Roth is a freelance translator and writer, as well as a nationally certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter for the deaf. With a career starting in 1981, Roth has worked in diverse settings including legal, medical, corporate, educational, scientific, social service, and mental health. Ellen has managed contracts with federal, state, and city entities, and various agencies. Roth's interpreting skills cater to a wide range of ASL users, including American-born individuals, immigrants, those with high visual needs, deaf-blind individuals, and others. Roth's areas of expertise include humanities, politics, policy, legal matters, and social services.

As a deaf individual born into a deaf family and a native of New York City, Roth has lived and worked in New York City, Chicago, New Mexico, and Washington, D.C. Roth's career began as an American Sign Language and International Sign Interpreter, ADA consultant, and expert in architectural accessibility. With extensive experience as an interpreter, writer, and consultant, Roth is now shifting focus to a consulting role at Accessibility Global Group.

Roth holds certifications from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, including Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) and a Specialty Certificate in Legal Interpretation (CLIP-R). Roth runs a private practice providing writing services for deaf clients, translating between ASL and English, particularly in legal contexts. Roth has also worked as a project manager for a small construction and renovation company in the DMV area, the AAR, and has experience as an Interpreter instructor at various universities, including Gallaudet. Other roles have included being a Disability Integration Advisor at FEMA, an Architectural Accessibility Investigator, and providing training sessions on various topics.

As an experienced presenter, Roth specializes in workshop and seminar facilitation, focusing on disability rights and laws, communication accessibility, and technologies for the deaf and hard of hearing. For a list of workshops, please refer to the Services tab on Roth's website.

Ellen received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master's degree from New York University, along with postgraduate certification in Public Policy, Budget, and Administration from San Diego State University. Roth is passionate about great stories, movies, books, fine cuisine, and wines, and loves traveling to new places, meeting local communities, and providing accessible technology training or interpreting services. Currently, Based in the nation's capitol - Washington D.C. Open to work virtually and onsite including travel.

Below are my terms and conditions, which reflect industry standards and local market demands.

Rates
  1. Rates are billed to the nearest quarter hour. Law enforcement and medical emergencies only on Sundays.
  2. Standard initial fee, covering up to two hours
    1. Negotiated rate per hour thereafter
  3. 2024 initial fee, covering up to two hours for subcontractors
    1. Then, per hour thereafter for subcontractors
  4. Discounts or differential rates for platform, performance, legal, international, or otherwise more demanding assignments will be negotiated at the time a request is made.
  5. Requests received ten full business days or more in advance of the beginning of the assignment are discounted a flat $10.00.
Travel

Day rates for offsite travel will be negotiated separately. Per diem will be assessed at the standard GSA Rates, and expenses incident to travel and lodging will be reimbursed at cost. Local parking, mileage, and travel costs may be negotiated at the time a request is made.

Coverage

Assignments over 1.5 hours long generally require a second interpreter. I can personally arrange for this at the subcontractor rates quoted above, or provide you with referrals at no charge. A full day of work will not be billed as a series of shorter assignments.

Short Notice Fee

A $50.00 fee may be added to requests made with less than three business days’ notice.

Cancellations

Cancellations made less than two business days in advance of the beginning of the assignment are considered untimely and will be billed. Multi-day assignments will only be billed within the two-day billable cancellation period.

Payment

Net 30 days from the invoice date. Late payments will be assessed an additional 5% after 14 days past due, and 6.5% after 30 days past due. MasterCard and Visa accepted with no additional fees.

Tax Credits

Your business may qualify for an annual tax credit between $250.00 – $10,000.00 for all of your reasonable accommodations expenditures under the Americans with Disabilities Act Download IRS Form 8826 and the Tax Incentives Packet for more information.
